Yes, I had a minute+ delay as well, until I corrected one unchecked square and then worked from the filled-in squares at the bottom of the 'grid'. The rest then fell quickly, although some applet funkiness made it tricky to navigate.
Interesting idea, I'd like to see more of these nested puzzle concepts (solve the grid, then solve something else). They turn up occasionally, and I do appreciate them, whether or not they work on all levels. Guess we've had our meta-puzzle senses heightened.
I needed about 30 seconds for the unchecked checkerboard squares (there's a pun in there somewhere).
Dan, will you still be putting up Andrew's recap of the Minnesota crossword tournament? I'm interested to hear how this puzzle played out on the boards.
I didn't think you pros would much care about the MN tournament! I guess I'll get that write-up going. There's a video too, which helps understand the frustration I had. The Thurs. puzzle was the teams final, NOT for individuals (one of many things wrong with the tournament). I'll get a full write-up tomorrow.
Oh, you don't have to do a whole write-up if your enthusiasm to do so has faded! And if you do, feel free to put it in a Facebook note or something, so more than a few dozen people can see it. :)

I had the rest of the NYT grid finished in 2:15, but couldn't understand what I was meant to do with the unchecked squares. No pun intended!
Similar experience of 6 + 1:45. If anyone is wondering tds is "timer didn't start."

He didn't send it to me. I'm curious too!
