Don't feel so bad, Al. I spent more than 10 minutes in the NW corner on the NYT, and probably half my time in the NW on the LAT, too. I blame the coffee shop WiFi :)
i also got stuck in the SW of the stumper, in part because i'd hastily written in ESCAPE POD, which didn't fit the clue very well. once i erased it, the whole thing came together.
And, holy moly, I beat Al by six minutes on the Stumper. That's one for the record books, along with the time I beat Amy which, as I recall, was also on a Stumper.

Biggest trouble for me was the NYT NE corner.

actually it was the SW for me in both the NYT and LAT.
