I unwittingly saw the theme entries before I solved the NYT, so my time doesn't count. Though for it to take that long while already knowing the reveal and a couple of the theme answers must speak to it's toughness. Like the crossing Joon pointed out above.
Late to the party, but I encountered similar problems. I made the same mistake that Joon did (b instead of f, I presume). I also got spoiled, though in a different manner than Dan and Andrew - saw Amy's Saturday comment about ILLEGAL as I was scrolling down to read her Wednesday post.
We all seemed to fumble in one way or another when trying to solve this puzzle. Well, maybe 'fumble' isn't quite the right word; are there any appropriate synonyms?

one error on the NYT at square 16. i did not like that crossing at all.

I was also spoiled on the NYT last night - somebody was posting alternate grids on Facebook.
Got distracted - and amused - by the last dozen Down clues in the Newsday. Random!
Dan -- Yeah, I found that really Odd too. I thought I may have been missing something there, but alas, nO.
