NYT 2:38 ... LAT 1:54 ... CS 1:56 ... ND 1:38 ... BEQ 3:28

That's one hell of a fast turnaround for the NYT tribute...

Would be interesting to know if there's a "morgue" of crossword puzzles, just as there is of obituaries. (For those unfamiliar with the term -- newspapers have obit drafts in their files for nationally and locally-important people that are pulled out when the need arises.) Puzzles could be pulled out not just upon death, but when the personality does something exciting (such as a planned tour?).

Good question, Mom! I've wondered that myself. I suspect the answer is no...

However - all the quickie tribute puzzles in recent years have been constructed by David J. Kahn, so I have to assume he's got some grids for mega-famous people ready to go.

nah, i doubt it. i think the point is that it just doesn't take that long for somebody like david kahn to make a puzzle. if he started working on it the day jacko died, i bet it was pretty much ready to go within 24 hours.

as i recall, byron had one last year (charlton heston) that was also a very quick turnaround, although not quite this quick.
